FOGG Open Letter – February 25, 2009

Here is an update from yesterday’s Port Commission meeting.

First, we want to thank all the FOGG supporters who came to the meeting, and particularly those who took the time to give great testimony in support of our position.  We intend to post some of their comments on our web site.  We will alert you when they are available.

As expected, the Port Staff proposed that the Commissioners approve proceeding with an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA) for the development of Seawall Lot 351 with the adjacent privately owned Blocks 168, 171 and 201 (Golden Gateway Tennis & Swim Club) with San Francisco Waterfront Partners (Simon Snellgrove).  At the same time they accepted Supervisor David Chiu’s proposal to do a six to eight month planning study of the entire northern waterfront before moving ahead with any final contract.

As usual the Port wants it both ways, but we do have the time to fine tune our strategy to save our present open recreational space, reduce the height limits, and keep the Public Trust Doctrine on Seawall Lot 351.

The planning review will be overseen by the San Francisco Planning Department.  We understand that many interested parties will be asked to participate in the deliberations.  FOGG truly expects to be one of the participants, and our major concern is that SFWP does not control the agenda to ram through their present proposal that reduces the Club open recreational space by over 52%.  We will work to be positive in our approach, but we will be vigilant in protecting our neighborhood and community interests.

Frankly it is hard to figure out how on one hand you can include the developer who has a specific agenda and at the same time have an unbiased review of overall planning.

This will take lots of volunteer time, and strong financial support.  We hope you will continue to support our efforts and make your tax deductible donations to keep our land use attorney working as hard as she can on our behalf.

You can make your donation by check made out to AGAPE/FOGG, with the notation on the memo line: “tax deductible donation.”  Please mail your check to James Eggert, CPA, 550 Davis St. #46, San Francisco, CA 94111.  You may also donate on line at this web site.  We are confident that your commitment to FOGG’s efforts will be successful and thank you for your continuing support.

We have a long way to go and recent events only strengthen our resolve to make sure we preserve the open recreational space that is a haven for so many families, young people, seniors, and many non-profit organizations throughout the community.
