FOGG Open Letter – January 14, 2019

Hello Again – and Good Bye!!

Hello FOGG Supporters!

Yes, it has been a while since we have talked to you.

And, that is a good thing.

Thankfully, we are unaware of any development plans to build on the Bay Club Gateway site, formally known as the Golden Gateway Tennis and Swim Club.

We have not been able to say that for some time, and that is wonderful.

Some of our new supporters may not be aware of what has happened since FOGG began in July of 2003.

Our Mission has always been to preserve the Golden Gateway Tennis and Swim Club as it is.

Since our founding in 2003, with your support and the support of countless others we have fought off two developers.

There is still one lawsuit ongoing between Golden Gateway Center and San Francisco Waterfront Partners II.  This lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial on January 14, 2019, in San Francisco Superior Court.

Case Number is CGC15548437 should you want to read about it.  SF Superior Court is at this link:

SF Superior Case CGC15548437

This is from the failed effort by SFWPII for the 8 Washington high rise luxury condominium development which was defeated by the voters of San Francisco in the November 5, 2013 election.  Over 60% of the San Francisco voters voted against this project.

Members of our FOGG Executive Committee have decided that we will now retire FOGG, as there is no imminent threat.

If any of our supporters know otherwise, please let us know.  We will look into it.

So, that is it.

The FOGG website will remain online as a memorial to the many efforts to preserve the Club.

We want to thank all our generous supporters who donated to the Kids Camp last year.  Many of you made additional gifts in memory of Lee Radner, our FOGG Chair, who passed away in May.  He would be so pleased that we sponsored 43 campers in 2018.  Thank you so much!

Good bye, and thank you all for your support!

Remembering Lee Radner

FOGG wants to update you on Lee Radner, who passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018.

We thank all of you who responded to our Alert about Lee’s death.  We were touched by how many of you spoke fondly of Lee, and the kind thoughts you shared.

Lee’s final wishes were to have his ashes combined with those of his wife Rogene.  The ashes will be taken to Hawaii by his daughters and spread at sea.  There will be no funeral service as was his request.

As many of our FOGG supporters know, Lee was passionate about the Summer Kids Camp Scholarship Program at the Bay Club – The Gateway.

Lee’s daughters asked, that as a final remembrance to him, our FOGG supporters can make a contribution to Kids Camp on Lee’s behalf.

If you would want to do this, please send your summer Kids Camp Scholarship Program tax deductible donations to PDF/FOGG, P.O. Box 2294, San Francisco, CA 94126.  On the memo line write “Lee Radner – 2018 Scholarship Fund.”

Should you prefer to donate online, you can do so at this FOGG website.

Click on the ‘Donate to 2018 Summer Kids Camp’ yellow donation button.

Lastly, FOGG wants to share with you a story about Lee and Rogene from May 2007 written by one of Lee’s longtime friends, Diana Taylor, who is the President of the Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association (BCNA).  We thank Diana for sharing this with us.  Lee was a founding Board member of BCNA.

The story can be read at the link on this website.

FOGG thanks again all our supporters, and we wish all of you happy moments in remember Lee.

Sad News – Lee Radner Has Passed Away

Lee Radner, our FOGG Chair, passed away Sunday evening, May 6, 2018.  He had suffered a stroke earlier that day.

He died peacefully.

His three daughters are currently in transit from their homes in Hawaii.  They will make final arrangements and take care of Lee’s personal items.

Lee was a stalwart in FOGG’s 15 year effort to save the Bay Club – The Gateway, previously known as the Golden Gateway Tennis & Swim Club, from being demolished and the site becoming luxury high-rise condominiums.

He also spearheaded FOGG’s Summer Kids Camp Scholarship Program for the last eight years.

Lee will be missed by many, as he had friends who knew that he could be counted on to help them in whatever way he could.

FOGG will advise you when we have more information to share with you.

Summer Kids Camps Scholarships – 8th Year

The Summer Kids Camps Program begins on Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Bay Club – The Gateway.  The Camps run through the last week of August.

This is the 8th year FOGG has worked with this Program, and, thanks to you and your tax deductible donations, we are confident that it will be a success.

This Scholarship Program allows youngsters 5 to 12 years of age, from low income housing to attend this one of a kind activity program.  The kids participate in swimming and tennis lessons, social activities including art programs, and a number of team programs, some selected by the youngsters themselves.

FOGG cannot sign up a youngster until we know the donations are available.  And, with the total support of the Bay Club, who provides one dollar for every dollar we raise, we can sponsor two kids for the cost of one.

FOGG is lucky to have Lela Waltjer as Camp Director and her very competent assistant Ranya Abdelfattah leading an excellent group of instructors and volunteers.  They guide the youngsters through seven hours of instruction and games, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

FOGG could not have provided that financial support for seven years without the generosity of so many individuals, businesses and corporations.

We wish to have a real head start on sign ups, and with your donations we can have the majority of youngsters ready by June 4th.

Please send your summer Kids Camp Scholarship Program tax deductible donations to PDF/FOGG, P.O. Box 2294, San Francisco, CA 94126.  On the memo line write “2018 Scholarship Fund.”

Should you prefer to donate online, you can do so at this FOGG website.  Click on the ‘Donate to 2018 Summer Kids Camp’ yellow donation button.

Thanks again to so many of you who have supported the Scholarship Program in the past.  We hope you will make your donation soon.
